Designing Life the Way We Design Spaces

As an interior designer, I spend my days thinking about how spaces support the way we live. How light moves. Where comfort naturally exists. What makes a space feel calm instead of chaotic?

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how much of that applies to life itself.

In design, it’s often the smallest details that create the greatest impact:
A well-placed lamp.
A chair that invites you to stay.
A texture that softens a room.

In life, the same is true.

Answering one email.
Clearing one surface.
Taking a moment to pause and reset.

These are not grand gestures—but they are foundational ones. Smaller decisions that impact the larger picture.

As Spring approaches, and with it, the feeling of fresh possibilities, we have an opportunity to look around and see what seemingly insignificant decisions we can make differently that would have an impact on the overall picture. Could you maybe turn in a little earlier at bedtime? Spend a few more moments grounding yourself in the morning? Or maybe spend a smidge less time on your phone?

These things may seem small, but their effects, i.e., waking up feeling restored and ready to start your day, having the presence of mind for when the first “fire” of the day arrives, or even having increased focus and productivity, can make huge waves in the long run.

I often remind my clients that, yes, interior design can mostly seem focused on aesthetics. But it’s also about form and in finding our why. And similar to how we can design a living room to accommodate more loved ones visiting or create a cozy oasis to retreat to, we can also design our lives with that same level of intention

We can create space for what matters.
We can arrange our habits to support who we want to become.
We can soften the hard edges of our routines with moments of care, just as we would layer a room with warmth and texture.

A life, much like a home, doesn’t come together all at once. It’s shaped slowly—choice by choice, detail by detail.

So maybe this season isn’t about a complete overhaul.
Maybe it’s about noticing.

Noticing what feels good and leaning into it.
Noticing what feels heavy and gently shifting it.
Noticing where a small adjustment could bring a sense of ease.

Because in both design and life, it’s rarely the grand gestures that transform a space—it’s the quiet, consistent decisions that make something feel just right.
